Sanae Takaichi launches second reshuffled cabinet

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has launched her second reshuffled cabinet, replacing ten of the eighteen ministers. The move is seen as an effort to consolidate her power base ahead of next year’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election. Key strategic figures, including Toshimitsu Motegi as Foreign Minister and Shinjiro Koizumi as Defense Minister, have been retained.

Notably, the reshuffle includes Hiroshi Nakatsuji from the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) as Minister for Regulatory Reform, marking the first time a member of the JIP has joined the cabinet. This strengthens the ruling coalition but places pressure on the government to fulfill coalition agreements, specifically regarding the reduction of seats in the House of Representatives.

The new administration faces immediate legislative challenges, including efforts to pass a consumption tax cut on food products and addressing rising prices. While Takaichi has maintained several influential allies, the removal of Yoshimasa Hayashi from his post as Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications is viewed by analysts as a move to sideline a potential political rival.
