Sanae Takaichi reaffirms Japan's support for ICC at UN

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the rule of law during her address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Takaichi identified North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs as a “serious threat” to global security and a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. She also expressed concern regarding the deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, noting that the security of the Indo-Pacific and the Euro-Atlantic regions are inseparable.

Addressing the current state of international governance, Takaichi emphasized that the United Nations is more important than ever but noted that the Security Council is currently failing to maintain international peace. She called for urgent reforms to the Council and advocated for the maintenance of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty regime. Additionally, she highlighted the need for resilient supply chains and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
