Sancti Spíritus authorities warn of WhatsApp account hijacking scams

The Ministry of the Interior in the province of Sancti Spíritus has identified WhatsApp account hijacking as a primary method used in technology-based scams. Criminals take control of users' accounts to impersonate them, using their names and profile pictures to deceive contacts.

In these schemes, scammers message the victim's friends and acquaintances, requesting immediate money transfers under the guise of personal emergencies. Victims have reported losing significant sums, such as 30,000 and 40,000 pesos, to these fraudulent requests. The regions of Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad, Cabaiguán, and Yaguajay have reported high numbers of these complaints.
