Sancti Spíritus hospital begins installation of new mammography equipment

The Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital in Sancti Spíritus has begun installing a new MAMMOMAT 3000 Nova mammography machine, aiming to restore essential diagnostic services that have been unavailable for over two years. The equipment was donated by the association CubaSí with support from German collaborators.

The previous machine became non-functional due to technical issues and a lack of replacement parts. During the service interruption, patients in Sancti Spíritus were forced to travel to Villa Clara to access exams at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital. The absence of local services forced medical officials to prioritize cases based on urgency and risk, which also limited options for conservative surgical procedures that require regular mammographic follow-ups.

Once the installation and processing system setup are complete—a process estimated to take at least 30 days—the hospital plans to prioritize first-time patients, those requiring pre-surgical evaluation, and individuals undergoing oncological treatment. The service will also be available to male patients; officials noted that three cases of male breast cancer have already been diagnosed in the province in 2026.
