Sancti Spíritus hospitalizes five youths over Shaka energy drink intoxication

Five young adults, aged 18 to 22, were hospitalized in August at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital in Sancti Spíritus due to intoxication from the Shaka energy drink.

According to Yaneisi Valdés Gutiérrez, the acting director of the hospital, four patients presented with symptoms including headaches, vomiting, sweating, and rapid heartbeat. A fifth patient arrived in a critical state, entering a coma that required mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit.

The Shaka energy drink contains caffeine, sugar, taurine, flavorings, and alcohol. Medical authorities warned that while the drink may initially cause feelings of euphoria or stimulation, excessive consumption can lead to irritability, agitation, elevated blood pressure, insomnia, and extreme fatigue.
