Sanctuary of the Cabeiri to undergo protection and promotion on Lemnos

The Greek Ministry of Culture has approved a comprehensive plan for the protection and promotion of the Sanctuary of the Cabeiri on the island of Lemnos. This project aims to transform the site into a modern, fully accessible, and recognizable archaeological destination.

The initiative focuses on the discovery, conservation, and highlighting of the ancient Perivolos. For the first time, the southern section of the archaeological site will be integrated into the visitor route. The project includes systematic archaeological investigation, the stabilization of existing structures, and limited, documented additions to ensure the monument's readability while adhering to principles of minimal intervention and reversibility.

Key features of the site include an archaic altar or ‘Step’ dating to the 7th century BC located on the southern plateau, and a Hellenistic altar on the northern plateau that was looted and destroyed during the Roman era. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated that this study is the next step in an integrated plan to protect one of the most significant archaeological sites in the North Aegean.
