Sanctuary policies in Illinois and California face scrutiny over immigration enforcement

Investigations into sanctuary state policies in Illinois and California reveal varying levels of interaction between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

In Illinois, despite state laws prohibiting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reports indicate that local officials helped flag, detain, or deport at least 150 people. This collaboration occurred in over one-third of Illinois counties through direct actions, such as sheriffs handing detainees over to federal agents, or inadvertent methods, such as the automatic sharing of fingerprints and names with federal databases.

In California, sanctuary policies designed to restrict local law enforcement's involvement with ICE have faced scrutiny following criminal incidents. In one case in Contra Costa County, an individual known to federal authorities was released on his own recognizance despite facing felony burglary charges and an existing immigration detainer. This release preceded a fatal stabbing of a local resident.
