Sandeep Patil discusses exits of Indian cricket legends

Former India chief selector Sandeep Patil has addressed the departures of several cricketing icons during his tenure as chairman of the selection committee between 2012 and 2016. Speaking on ‘The Great Indian Cricket Show’ on Doordarshan, Patil stated that legends including Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, and Zaheer Khan had to leave the national team or retire as part of a strategic focus on the future of Indian cricket.

Patil emphasized that decisions were made collectively by a five-member panel and were driven by the interests of the BCCI and the national team rather than personal relationships. He noted that while selectors may be friends with players, professional boundaries must be maintained to prioritize long-term institutional goals over individual players.

The period following India’s 2011 ODI World Cup victory saw a strategic shift toward youth investment. During this phase, Tendulkar retired from ODIs in late 2012, Yuvraj Singh struggled to regain his form following cancer treatment, Gambhir faced selection issues due to form, and Zaheer Khan dealt with fitness challenges prior to his retirement in 2015.
