Sandeep Reddy Vanga sparks debate over Sekhar Kammula’s film heroes

Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has sparked a social media debate following comments regarding director Sekhar Kammula’s protagonists. During an EPIC pre-release event, Vanga stated that he does not particularly like the heroes in Kammula’s films, though he noted an appreciation for Kammula’s heroines.

The remarks have highlighted the contrasting cinematic styles of the two directors. Kammula is noted for creating empathetic, emotionally vulnerable, and grounded characters in films such as ‘Anand’, ‘Godavari’, and ‘Happy Days’. In contrast, Vanga’s protagonists, seen in works like ‘Arjun Reddy’ and ‘Animal’, are characterized by aggression, obsession, and intense masculinity.

In response to Vanga’s comments, social media users have criticized his own approach to character writing, questioning whether his portrayal of flawed and often violent characters serves as a valid alternative to Kammula’s more traditional hero archetypes.
