Sander Skotheim enters medal race in Birmingham decathlon

Norwegian decathlete Sander Skotheim is in contention for a medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. After the first day of competition, Skotheim sits in third place with 4,382 points.

He trails the leader, Germany’s Leo Neugebauer, by 101 points. Skotheim noted that while winning gold may require Neugebauer to make a mistake, he feels he is in good form and is aiming for at least a silver medal. During the 400-meter event, Skotheim clocked 48.31 seconds, while Neugebauer was approximately half a second slower.

Skotheim’s season has been challenging due to a ligament injury in his foot that required surgery in January. The decathlon will conclude on Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500-meter run.
