Sandi AI provides solar irrigation and AI tools to African farmers

Sandi AI, an agri-tech startup founded by Douglas Albert Kikonyogo, is providing smallholder farmers in East Africa with access to solar irrigation technology. To overcome barriers such as a lack of credit scores, land titles, or collateral, the company utilizes a collective savings model. Through platforms like WhatsApp and USSD, farming groups can pool resources to purchase equipment incrementally, transitioning from cash savings to productive agricultural technology.

The company’s technological suite includes an AI-driven system that integrates satellite imagery, weather data, and soil sensors to automate irrigation. This system uses solar-powered pumps to deliver water only when necessary, potentially reducing water consumption by up to 90% while lowering operational costs. Additionally, Sandi AI offers an AI virtual assistant to guide farmers on planting periods, crop rotation, and fertilizer application.

Currently operating in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, Sandi AI has reached over 10,000 farming groups. The startup plans to expand its services to Zambia and Malawi.
