SanDisk rebrands SSD lineup amid rising storage costs

The consumer solid-state drive (SSD) market is undergoing significant shifts due to corporate restructuring and supply shortages. SanDisk is consolidating its consumer flash storage and SSD lineups under its standalone brand following a restructuring that separated it from Western Digital. This transition includes rebranding former WD_BLACK and WD Blue products into the SanDisk family, which is now segmented into Optimus, Optimus GX, and Optimus GX Pro tiers.

Simultaneously, a DRAM shortage driven by the AI boom is causing dramatic price increases for high-capacity storage. A 4TB Samsung 870 EVO SATA III SSD, which cost approximately $170 in late 2023, has seen prices rise to as much as $1,100 in some listings. While some alternative brands like TeamGroup and Crucial offer more affordable options, the overall cost of high-capacity and high-performance drives is increasing significantly.
