Sandomierz watermen row to Warsaw to honor 82nd Warsaw Uprising anniversary

More than 20 participants on 11 wooden boats left the Vistula bulwark in Sandomierz on Wednesday, 29 July, as part of the 11th Warsaw Expedition. The group, composed of local watermen and friends from several other voivodeships, will travel down the river to Warsaw for the 1 August ceremonies marking the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. All boats fly a white‑red flag bearing the Uprising emblem.

Marek Bażant of the group Napędzani Wisłą said the trip connects to his family’s patriotic heritage and offers a unique encounter with the river’s beauty. Experienced waterman Stanisław Baska noted the low water level and the emergence of new islands, calling the conditions “interesting” for the journey. Mayor Paweł Niedźwiedź praised the initiative as a beautiful tradition that shows love for the country and commemorates one of Poland’s greatest national uprisings.

The first stop is the evening of 29 July in Kazimierz Dolny, after which additional boats are expected to join, bringing the total to 16. The expedition will culminate on 1 August in Warsaw’s Port Czerniakowski, where the participants will take part in river‑side ceremonies honouring the Uprising fighters, especially those who fought along the Vistula banks.
