Sandoz receives Canadian approval for generic Ozempic
Swiss generic manufacturer Sandoz has received approval from Health Canada to sell a generic version of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy. The authorization is intended for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes.
This move is part of Sandoz’s strategy to expand its portfolio of GLP-1 class medications. The company noted that the GLP-1 market in Canada is estimated to be worth US$ 2.6 billion, with nearly six million Canadians living with diabetes.
Sandoz previously secured approval for a semaglutide generic named Owozy in Brazil, which it plans to market in partnership with Adalvo. Regarding financial impact, the company stated it does not expect these generic launches to contribute significantly to profits this year and that the Canadian approval does not alter its 2026 projections.
Additionally, Sandoz announced a licensing, development, manufacturing, and commercialization agreement with mAbxience for a generic version of Roche Holding’s Hemlibra, a medication used to treat hemophilia.
