Sandra Bullock discusses grief and partner's ALS battle

Actress Sandra Bullock has opened up about her personal journey following the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, who passed away in 2023 at age 57 after a three-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

During an appearance on the ‘SmartLess’ podcast, Bullock discussed the isolation she felt while honoring Randall’s request to keep his diagnosis private. She described the experience as a ‘trifecta that was pretty dark,’ compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and the emotional toll of caregiving. Bullock noted that she began the grieving process years before his physical passing, stating, ‘My person left a lot earlier than the body left.’

Bullock also shared how her two adopted children, Louis and Laila, navigated the illness. She observed that they were ‘very, very astute’ in recognizing the physical and behavioral changes in their family. The actress admitted that the exhaustion of caregiving led her to step away from acting temporarily to protect her mental health, a hiatus she is now ending as she prepares for upcoming projects, including a sequel to ‘Practical Magic’.
