Sandra Hüller identifies as a Thuringian European

Actress Sandra Hüller has stated in a recent interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung that she does not personally identify as German. Instead, she describes herself as a “Thuringian European” or a “European Thuringian.”

Hüller, who was born in Suhl, Thuringia, noted that while she does not claim a German identity, she believes individuals born in the country bear a responsibility toward its development that cannot be ignored. She mentioned that in international settings, she is frequently confronted with questions regarding German history and current political developments.

Addressing the political climate in her home state of Thuringia, Hüller expressed a refusal to accept a purely negative political image of the region. She noted that she cannot be held personally responsible for the political decisions or election results of others, nor does she wish to see Thuringia defined solely by the rise of the AfD.
