Sandro Pertini: Remembering the former Italian President
Sandro Pertini, the former President of the Italian Republic, would have turned 130 years old on September 25. A prominent figure in Italian history, Pertini was a socialist, anti-fascist, and partisan who maintained strong political convictions throughout the most turbulent periods of the 20th century.
Born in Stella, Savona, in 1896, Pertini’s life was marked by his opposition to the fascist regime. He was arrested in 1929 and sentenced to eleven years in prison, enduring periods of detention and confinement in locations such as Ponza and Ventotene. He famously refused to seek clemency from the regime in exchange for his freedom, viewing liberty as inseparable from his political identity.
His early life included service in the artillery during World War I and academic pursuits in law and political science. Following the war, he became an active member of the Italian Socialist Party, eventually rising to become one of Italy’s most beloved presidents during the era of democratic reconstruction.
