Sandro: Remembering the legacy of the Argentine romantic music icon

August 19 marks the birthday of Roberto Sánchez Ocampo, known professionally as Sandro, one of Argentina’s most iconic romantic music artists. Born in 1945, Sandro built a massive career that established him as a major figure in Latin American music.

His musical journey was influenced by his admiration for Elvis Presley, a passion that began during a school performance in 1957. Throughout his career, he released numerous hits, including the 1969 classic ‘Rosa Rosa’, which sold two million records. Other enduring songs that continue to define his legacy include ‘Así’, ‘Porque yo te amo’, ‘Trigal’, and ‘Tengo’.

Though often associated with Banfield, where he lived in a well-known mansion, his roots trace back to Lanús. His stage name, Sandro, was a tribute to his parents, as authorities did not allow him to be officially registered under that name.
