Sandro Tonali joins Tottenham in club‑record £100m deal

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the signing of 26‑year‑old Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee that could rise to £100 million – an initial £92.5 million payment plus £7.5 million in add‑ons. The transfer sets a new club record and sees Tonali sign a six‑year contract, taking the No. 16 shirt previously worn by Gareth Bale.

Tonali, who made 110 appearances and scored 10 goals for Newcastle, helped the Magpies win the 2025 Carabao Cup. He said the move was driven by his desire to work with fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi, stating, “It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”

Tottenham’s summer spending now exceeds £230 million, with other arrivals including Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka. Newcastle will use the funds to rebuild, reportedly targeting Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi as a replacement.

De Zerbi praised Tonali as “a special player” and expects him to become a key figure in a revamped midfield as the club aims to improve on a season that saw them finish 17th in the Premier League.
