Sandro Wagner appointed as new Hannover 96 head coach

Hannover 96 has appointed former Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner as their new head coach, signing him to a contract through June 2028. Wagner succeeds Christian Titz, who was dismissed following a slow start to the 2. Bundesliga season. Wagner, who previously served as an assistant coach for the German national team and managed FC Augsburg, is expected to begin training the squad on Monday.

During his introduction, Wagner described himself as an ‘arbeiter’ (worker) and expressed enthusiasm for the club’s tradition and fan culture. Hannover 96 sporting director Jonas Boldt noted that Wagner’s intensive preparation and meticulous work ethic were key factors in the decision.

In his first match following the coaching change, interim coach Lars Barlemann led Hannover 96 to a 2-1 victory over VfL Bochum. The win, featuring goals from Stefan Teitur Thordarson and Marcel Hartel, provides momentum heading into the international break, during which Wagner will officially take charge.
