Saône-et-Loire launches major road safety enforcement operations

Authorities in Saône-et-Loire have launched a large-scale road safety operation following a significant rise in traffic fatalities. Since January 1, 2026, the department has recorded 277 accidents resulting in 368 injuries and 22 deaths, representing a 22% increase in fatalities compared to the previous year.

In response, Prefect Dominique Dufour and Police Commissioner Pierre Alexandre Gelas implemented a zero-tolerance enforcement strategy. The operation included ground patrols by national police from Montceau and Chalon, canine units, and motorcycle officers, supported by aerial surveillance from the Metz Air and Border Police over the RN 70 sector.

Key factors identified in the recent accidents include speeding, alcohol, and drug use. Beyond enforcement, the prefecture has invested over 50,000 euros in prevention and awareness campaigns through the departmental road safety action plan (PDASR). Authorities have indicated that reinforced operations will continue during upcoming weekends.
