Sanepar adds new reservoir to secure water for 130,000 in south Curitiba

Sanepar has completed a 10‑million‑litre double‑wall steel reservoir in the Tatuquara district of Curitiba. The facility raises the region’s total storage capacity from 15 million to 25 million litres and, together with 27 km of new pipelines, will provide continuous water supply to about 130 000 residents in the neighborhoods of Tatuquara, Umbará, Cidade Industrial, Sítio Cercado and Pinheirinho. The project, built in 12 months at a cost of roughly 40 million reais, is described as the largest double‑layer steel reservoir in Latin America and aims to reduce interruptions during peak demand.

Alongside the infrastructure build, Sanepar has been running ecological restoration research around its reservoirs since 2014. Experiments on 25 ha of degraded land near the Piraquara II reservoir have involved planting 250 000 native tree seedlings and testing soil‑improvement techniques. The studies show that restoring native vegetation reduces erosion, improves water infiltration, enhances water quality and supports long‑term water availability for the public supply system.
