Sanford Health completes merger with North Memorial Health

Sanford Health has finalized its merger with North Memorial Health, creating a combined nonprofit healthcare system. The South Dakota-based Sanford Health will now operate North Memorial facilities under its banner, marking its first entry into the Twin Cities market.

The merger follows a ten-year oversight agreement brokered by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Under this agreement, the new organization must maintain core services at Robbinsdale Hospital, including its Level 1 trauma center, and ensure that reproductive and gender-affirming care, as well as behavioral and mental health services, are not reduced in scope. The agreement also mandates the honoring of collective-bargaining agreements and the maintenance of existing emergency transportation services.

As part of the deal, Sanford Health has committed $600 million in investments to Minnesota healthcare infrastructure. This includes $500 million for the expansion of Maple Grove Hospital and $100 million to modernize Robbinsdale Hospital. The combined system employs approximately 61,000 workers and serves 2.5 million patients across 60 hospitals in the Upper Midwest.
