Sangay Volcano in Ecuador shows increased eruptive activity
The Sangay Volcano in Ecuador is experiencing increased eruptive activity, according to the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School. Surface activity is currently rated as moderate with an upward trend, while internal activity remains low but also trending upward.
Monitoring cameras have recorded episodes of incandescence, with incandescent material descending the northwest flank up to 200 meters below the crater level. Ash columns have reached heights of up to 2.5 kilometers above the crater, with wind patterns displacing material toward the northwest. Ashfall has already been reported in nearby localities and in Chimborazo.
Authorities have warned of possible sporadic explosions and advise against approaching the crater area, particularly for mountaineers and hikers. The community of Columbe is among the areas exposed to potential ashfall. The Geophysical Institute has committed to issuing daily reports and ashfall simulations to track the volcano's behavior.
