Sanger High School students exposed to graphic art in dual-enrollment course
Parents in Central California are demanding answers from the Sanger Unified School District after students aged 14 to 18 were exposed to graphic content in a summer dual-enrollment art course. The class, titled ‘Art 2 Introduction to Visual Culture’ and taught by professor Jose Soria at Reedley College, featured elements from the ‘Wo/Manhouse 2022’ art installation.
Content reported by parents included imagery of a bleeding woman with a coat hanger, a transgender-themed bathroom with signs regarding testosterone injection sites, and explicit language taped to walls. The installation was part of an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of feminist art.
Sanger Unified School Board Superintendent Dennis Weichmann stated that while the curriculum is established by Reedley College and not modified for high schoolers, the district believes parents should have the information necessary to make informed decisions regarding their students' participation.
