Sangão student death confirmed as asphyxiation by boyfriend

A forensic report has confirmed that 19-year-old biology student Joviana Evelyn Iankovski died of asphyxiation due to cervical constriction. The death occurred in Sangão, southern Santa Catarina, between the night of August 6 and the early morning of August 7.

José Gustavo Rabelo de Souza, 21, confessed to the killing, stating he applied a chokehold during an argument after the victim discovered messages he had exchanged with other women. According to police investigations, the victim attempted to leave the residence but was prevented and assaulted by the suspect.

Following the incident, the body remained in the bedroom throughout the weekend. The crime was discovered after the victim's mother noticed unusual messages being sent from her daughter's phone. The suspect eventually informed his own family on Monday before surrendering to the police. He is currently in preventive detention while investigations continue.
