Sangrur car accident kills eight labourers in Punjab

Eight workers, including six women, were killed and 12 others injured after a speeding car struck a group of labourers in the Sangrur district of Punjab. The incident occurred near Alisher village on the Jakhal-Lehra road while the victims, who were enrolled under the Viksit Bharat Guarantee Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM G) scheme, were taking a break by the roadside.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene following the collision. Local residents have raised concerns regarding a reported hour-long delay in the arrival of emergency ambulances, claiming some victims had to be transported to hospitals in commercial vehicles while waiting for medical assistance.

In response, the Punjab government has announced it will cover the full cost of medical treatment for all injured workers. Additionally, Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that the families of the deceased will each receive Rs 2 lakh in financial assistance. Officials confirmed that the injured are receiving treatment at hospitals in Sangrur and Patiala.
