Sangrur: Youth consumes poison alleging harassment over drug video
A man identified as Jagseer Singh, also known as Jagga, allegedly consumed poison outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sangrur, Punjab. The incident has sparked significant political debate regarding the drug crisis in the state.
Jagseer Singh, a resident of Namol village, claimed he was being harassed and threatened with death after posting a video on social media regarding the alleged sale of drugs, specifically chitta, in his village. He further alleged that the village sarpanch, Sukhbir Singh, and his associates assaulted him, damaged his property, and removed CCTV cameras from his residence.
Following the incident, Singh was treated at a government hospital in Sangrur before being transferred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala due to his serious condition. His friend, Manjinder Singh, stated that the family had previously attempted to report drug activities to the police without receiving effective assistance.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, including the BJP and Congress, who have questioned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s ability to maintain a ‘Drug-Free Punjab.’ Local police have stated that the matter is under investigation and have registered a case concerning the alleged assault and property damage.
