Sanitation and waste management issues reported in Tocoa and Colón
In Tocoa, Colón, residents and merchants are facing significant concerns due to sewage overflows. José Estrada, head of Sermunast, stated that the issue stems from long-standing problems across multiple administrations. The canal intended to direct water to the El Antigual creek has reportedly been obstructed by constructions along the CA-13 highway, causing water to divert into the Toronjal sector. Authorities are awaiting technical evaluations to determine the necessary investment and engineering works required to resolve the drainage issues and address illegal constructions over drainage spaces.
In the Colón district of Panama, uncertainty surrounds the future of waste collection services. The current concessionaire, AguAseo, has proposed a contract renewal focused on expanded coverage, technology, and environmental sustainability. However, Colón Mayor Diógenes Galvan has rejected the proposal. The situation is further complicated by significant debt, with AguAseo reporting that 34 state entities owe the company more than $782,000. While the current concession is not set to expire until April 2027, the lack of a clear selection process for a new provider has created local instability.
