Sanjay Manjrekar puzzled by IPL generation's Test cricket success

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed surprise at the ability of the current generation of players, developed through the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T20 formats, to excel in Test cricket.

Manjrekar described the successful transition as a ‘mystery’, noting the fundamental differences in batting demands between the two formats. He used a musical analogy to illustrate the challenge, stating, “Modern pop singers, if they are asked to do classical singing, ragas, then it will be very difficult. But these people are doing that.”

While T20 cricket requires an aggressive, high-risk approach to maximize runs quickly, Test cricket demands patience, discipline, and the ability to build innings methodically over extended periods. Manjrekar highlighted that the mental and technical shift required to move from the fast-paced T20 mindset to the measured approach of red-ball cricket is significant.
