Sankofa Gold Mine targets production growth and new tailings facility
Sankofa Gold Mine, a state-owned company under the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is working to stabilize operations and expand its tailings infrastructure. Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson recently visited the Prestea-based mine, urging management to sustain production and maximize Ghana’s gold resources to support national economic development and revenue.
Simultaneously, the company is racing to complete a new tailings storage facility. Managing Director Alhaji Ishaq Dauda reported that the project is approximately 80 percent complete, with a target for completion by the end of October. The urgency is driven by the fact that the existing dam has only about three months of capacity remaining. Construction delays were attributed to heavy rainfall and engagements with traditional authorities, but the company is working around the clock to meet its revised schedule.
