Sanmin Sports Center faces scrutiny over budget hikes and facility issues
Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Mei-ya has called for transparency regarding the budget and facility quality of the Sanmin Sports Center. Chen noted that the project's total cost rose from an initial 401 million TWD in 2022 to 765 million TWD upon completion in 2026, an increase of approximately 364 million TWD. She questioned why, despite this nearly 90% budget increase, citizens have reported issues such as inadequate gym equipment, unpleasant odors in restrooms, and skin irritation after using the swimming pool.
The Kaohsiung Sports Development Bureau responded by stating that water quality tests currently meet regulatory standards for pH and residual chlorine. Officials noted that a temporary instance of cloudy water during a high-traffic period on August 5 was addressed immediately. To address equipment concerns, the bureau announced that the number of treadmills has been increased from 4 to 15 to match other local sports centers. Additionally, the gym's free trial period has been extended to September 15 to allow citizens to experience the updated space and provide further feedback.
