Sanna Manjang faces military trial for desertion in The Gambia

Sanna Manjang, the former leader of the Gambian paramilitary unit known as the “Junglers,” has appeared in a military court in Banjul to face charges of desertion. Manjang is accused of being absent from the armed forces for a continuous period of nine years with the intent to desert, following his flight from the country in 2017 after the end of President Yahya Jammeh’s 20-year rule.

Manjang was arrested in Senegal last November and repatriated to The Gambia one month later. This trial follows the dismissal of previous murder charges against him in July, which were dropped because the state struggled to summon witnesses.

The Junglers have been accused by the United Nations of involvement in extrajudicial killings, torture, and other abuses. Investigations by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) found that between 240 and 250 people were killed by the state during the Jammeh administration.
