Sanofi invests 2 billion euros in new insulin plant in Frankfurt

Sanofi has broken ground on a new insulin production facility in Frankfurt-Höchst, Germany, representing a 2 billion euro investment. The 36,000-square-meter plant is designed to replace an existing facility and secure the long-term supply of insulin for patients across Germany and Europe.

The new site will utilize artificial intelligence to optimize production processes and is expected to become one of the largest insulin manufacturing locations in Europe upon its commissioning in 2032. The project aims to strengthen European medical sovereignty and ensure supply chain resilience, a priority highlighted by the company following the COVID-19 pandemic.

To support the project, the European Commission approved 400 million euros in state aid to be provided by the German federal government, the state of Hesse, and the city of Frankfurt. The facility is expected to produce at least 1.1 tons of insulin annually, with requirements for Sanofi to maintain a one-ton reserve of pharmaceutical insulin active ingredients to prioritize European markets during potential shortages.
