Sanofi reaches agreement with European Commission over flu vaccine messaging

Sanofi has reached an agreement with the European Commission to resolve an investigation into its promotional messaging regarding its flu vaccine, Efluelda. The investigation focused on whether Sanofi’s communications regarding its product potentially misled healthcare professionals about the scientific validity of a competing vaccine, Fluad, developed by CSL Seqirus.

The Commission expressed concerns that Sanofi’s messaging might have suggested that official health recommendations exclusively favored Efluelda or that Fluad lacked robust scientific backing. Such biased information could impact clinical decision-making by preventing doctors from objectively comparing available alternatives.

Under the agreement, Sanofi will avoid potential financial penalties without admitting to an infringement. The company is required to implement specific corrective measures in France and Germany for a period of two years. This includes publishing clarifications on its websites regarding the assessments of national health authorities to ensure medical professionals receive balanced information.
