Sanofi to receive €400 million in German aid to secure insulin supply
The European Commission has approved €400 million in German state aid for Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH to secure the supply of human insulin and insulin analogues. The measure is designed to compensate the pharmaceutical company for net costs associated with providing a service of general economic interest and to prevent production bottlenecks.
As part of the agreement, Sanofi commits to building a new insulin factory at its Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst site by the end of 2032. The facility is expected to produce at least 1.1 tonnes of insulin annually through 2042. Additionally, the company must maintain a stockpile of 1 tonne of insulin active pharmaceutical ingredients and prioritize supply to European Economic Area (EEA) markets during shortages.
The Commission noted that without this aid, Sanofi would close its German site, which is currently the only production facility for human insulin within the EEA. Such a closure would increase European dependence on imports from third countries.
