Sanok Museum: 17th-century wooden church destroyed by fire
A devastating fire at the Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok, Poland, has completely destroyed the 17th-century wooden St. Nicholas Church. The blaze, which broke out around 1:00 AM, consumed the historic structure and its valuable interior contents, including historic organs that were older than the building itself.
In addition to the church, the fire damaged two nearby historic buildings: a 19th-century cottage from Niebocko and a barn. While firefighters managed to protect approximately ten other wooden structures in the vicinity, the loss of the church is described by museum director Marcin Krowiak as an incalculable loss to the region's cultural heritage.
Approximately 140 firefighters from 27 units responded to the emergency. During the operation, one firefighter sustained a hand burn. The museum has announced it will remain closed to visitors, and all planned events have been canceled until further notice. Police and fire experts are investigating the cause of the fire.
