Sanremo brawl prompts call for stricter security measures

A violent brawl broke out on the night of 6 August 2026 in Via Matteotti, the centre of Sanremo, Italy. The clash involved bottles and belts and required police intervention, highlighting concerns over public safety in the town.

Stefano Bottero, provincial security chief for the right‑wing party Fratelli d'Italia, condemned the incident as “unacceptable” and urged the rapid implementation of the newly signed Decreto Sicurezza. Bottero called for tougher legal tools, harsher sanctions and stronger protection for law‑enforcement officers, arguing that such measures are the only effective response to urban violence.

The party reiterated its support for the police and stressed the need for immediate, decisive action to safeguard residents, merchants and tourists in the region.
