Sanremo Music Festival bans AI from replacing human creativity in 2027

The Sanremo Music Festival has introduced new regulations for its 2027 edition, specifically targeting the use of artificial intelligence. The rules mandate that lyrics and music must maintain a human creative core, prohibiting AI systems from replacing, altering, or distorting the essential human contribution of the participating artists.

While the festival allows for technological assistance, the RAI and artistic direction will implement checks to ensure generative AI does not substitute for human authorship. This poses technical challenges regarding hybrid productions where AI might suggest melodies or lyrics that are subsequently modified by humans. Potential enforcement methods include digital watermarking, forensic analysis of original demos, and the use of standards like C2PA to track content history.

The 77th edition, scheduled for February 16–20, 2027, will feature 24 artists and introduce new formats. Notably, winning Sanremo will no longer automatically guarantee a spot in the Eurovision Song Contest; instead, a dedicated 'Performance Night' will be held to select Italy's representative. Additionally, the festival will debut online voting via RaiPlay.
