Sansevieria plant care and watering techniques

The Sansevieria plant, also known as the snake plant or 'língua-de-sogra', is a resilient species native to Africa that thrives in indoor environments with low humidity. Because its rigid, succulent leaves store water, the plant is susceptible to root rot if the substrate remains continuously saturated.

To maintain healthy growth, it is recommended to use well-draining soil, such as a mixture designed for cacti and succulents, and containers with drainage holes. Watering should only occur when the substrate is dry. A practical method to check moisture levels at depth is the wooden stick test: inserting a clean, untreated wooden stick into the soil allows the grower to see if moisture adheres to the wood, indicating that the roots still have access to water.

Environmental factors such as light, temperature, and pot size influence how quickly the soil dries, meaning watering schedules should be based on soil condition rather than a fixed calendar.
