Sant Agustí Church recovers historic crypt in Tarragona
Archaeological excavations at the Sant Agustí Church in Tarragona have successfully recovered a historic crypt that had been hidden beneath the temple floor for decades. The summer intervention, conducted under archaeological supervision, involved removing accumulated debris to reveal the space's architectural volume.
The findings include the identification of original access points, various construction elements, and ornamental walls. These discoveries provide new insights into the church's architectural, religious, and funerary evolution, particularly regarding its development between the 16th and 18th centuries. The documentation of historical filling episodes will also help researchers understand why the space was eventually abandoned and concealed.
