Sant Cugat breaks ground on first Mormon temple in Catalonia

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has officially broken ground on a new temple in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Catalonia. This marks the first Mormon temple in Catalonia and only the second in Spain, following the one established in Madrid in 1999.

The new facility, located in the Volpelleres neighborhood, is intended to serve members across Catalonia, Aragon, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, and southern France. Previously, members in these regions had to travel to Madrid for significant religious ceremonies. The project is funded by member contributions and will allow for certain ordinances to be performed in Catalan.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, local officials and church leaders emphasized the importance of religious coexistence and community integration. Sant Cugat Mayor Josep Maria Vallès noted the project's potential to foster respect and shared responsibility within the city. James W. McConkie III, president of the Central Europe Area, expressed gratitude for the establishment of the temple in the region.
