Sant Cugat commemorates martyr Cugat with July 27 ceremony

Every 27 July, the town of Sant Cugat in Spain holds a solemn celebration for its patron martyr, Cugat. The event, organized by the Parish of Sant Pere d'Octavià, begins with a Mass in the Monastery of Sant Cugat, followed by a procession of prayers and a traditional Moixiganga dance performed by the folk group Esbart Mediterrània with support from the local sardanista association. The dance, rooted in Corpus Christi traditions, dramatizes scenes from the Passion of Christ.

According to local legend, Cugat was a North‑African merchant who embraced Christianity, traveled to present‑day Catalonia, and was imprisoned and decapitated in 304 AD for refusing to renounce his faith. His story has been preserved for centuries by the monastery, giving the city its name and providing a historic backdrop to the annual festivities.
