Sant Mateu convent restoration completed with 2.9 million euro investment

Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu visited Sant Mateu to inspect the completed restoration of the ancient Sant Domènech Convent. The project, a significant heritage site in the Maestrat region, received an investment of 2,965,710 euros through a Spanish government program aimed at improving the competitiveness and revitalization of historical heritage for tourism.

The rehabilitation works, carried out by Cyrespa Arquitectónico S. L., focused on recovering the medieval site and adapting it for tourism, cultural, and social uses. The project incorporated standards for sustainability, accessibility, and enhanced visitor experiences. The convent holds historical importance due to its links to the Order of Montesa and is recognized as a site of local relevance.

During the visit, Hereu was accompanied by the Government Sub-delegate of Castellón, Antonia García, and the Mayor of Sant Mateu, Ana Besalduch. The restoration is expected to boost the local economy by strengthening tourism, accommodation, and guide services while promoting territorial cohesion.
