Sant Pere de Ribes initiates Garraf Agricultural Space to safeguard local farms

The municipal government of Sant Pere de Ribes is leading the creation of an "Espai Agrari" that will bring together farmers cultivating the roughly 2,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Garraf region. Mayor Ana Herrera says the initiative will provide the sector with the resources and coordinated governance needed to address water shortages, pig attacks and bureaucratic delays, and to preserve the area's distinctive landscape.

The project is being prepared with a preliminary diagnosis by the Diputació de Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya. It is open to neighboring municipalities, aiming to form a broader Garraf Agricultural Space that differs from a "Parc Agrari" by focusing on protection rather than commercial exploitation. Local growers, including vintner Xavi Puig Batet, have welcomed the effort, noting that it responds to long‑standing concerns about insufficient support for agriculture.
