Sant Pere de Vic Cathedral begins restoration of Josep Maria Sert murals
The Spanish Ministry of Culture, through the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE), has launched a major restoration project for the mural paintings of Josep Maria Sert at the Sant Pere de Vic Cathedral in Barcelona. Part of the National Cathedral Plan, the project involves an investment of 1,851,321.08 euros and is expected to last 21 months.
Executed by the restoration company ARTYC, the intervention is described as one of the most extensive and complex undertaken by the IPCE in recent years. The scope includes 1,897 square meters of canvases attached to the central nave's perimeter walls and 3,730 square meters of surrounding architectural decoration, such as pillars, pilasters, and balconies.
The technical process will follow principles of minimal intervention and material stability. Work will begin with the installation of access equipment and a detailed conservation study to refine previous diagnoses. Specific tasks include surface cleaning, removal of overpainting, fixing pictorial layers, and chromatic integration to ensure the long-term preservation of the works painted between 1940 and 1945.
