Santa Ana aquatic center opening sparks controversy
The grand opening of the $29.3 million Memorial Park Aquatic Center in Santa Ana, California, has drawn criticism after local residents reported being denied entry while politicians held a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Residents, including longtime neighborhood resident Diana Vargas, stated that families were turned away from the facility on October 17. According to reports, some individuals were told the opening was ‘only for VIPs’ and specific students from Washington Elementary. While families were excluded, elected officials, including Congressman Lou Correa, participated in photo opportunities to promote the new facility.
City Manager Alvaro Nuñez acknowledged communication and access issues, stating that the city is conducting an internal review regarding staff communication and program planning delays. The review may result in disciplinary action if warranted. Despite the ceremony, the facility has not yet fully opened to the general public.
