Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua is implementing a stricter approach to homelessness and public safety, emphasizing that compassion must be paired with accountability. In a viral social media video, Amezcua stated that while assistance is available, those who refuse help and break the law will face enforcement. She emphasized that residents deserve clean neighborhoods, safe parks, and secure streets for businesses.

Amezcua specifically noted that drug-related activity will not be tolerated. Her stance has drawn comparisons to Los Angeles, with critics using the video to question Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass regarding the rising homelessness figures in her city.

The crackdown aligns with an Orange County anti-camping ordinance passed last November. Under these rules, law enforcement can target unhoused individuals who refuse shelter offers or service linkages while camping on county property, such as parks and flood control channels. Violators may face fines of up to $1,000 and potential jail time, with deputies authorized to issue citations or make arrests without prior warning.
