Santa Ana police warn of venomous Gaboon viper sighting
The Santa Ana Police Department has issued a public advisory following the sighting of a Gaboon viper in a Southern California residential neighborhood. The snake was last seen near the intersection of Main Street and Edinger Avenue.
Native to the tropical regions of central, east, and west Africa, the Gaboon viper is not native to North America. It is noted for having the longest fangs of any snake in the world and can grow to over six feet in length. While described as passive hunters that wait concealed to strike, they are highly venomous and known to hold onto prey until it dies.
Authorities are urging residents to remain aware of their surroundings and have cautioned the public: “If you see the snake, DO NOT approach or attempt to handle it.” Anyone with information regarding the snake's location is asked to contact the department.
