The Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) has reported a critical escalation in the country's penitentiary crisis. Since April 2026, more than 60 detainees have died while in state custody. Recent fatalities include Luis Alejandro García, who died from suspected tuberculosis at the Centro de Formación Hombre Nuevo Juan López, a facility currently operating at 157% capacity with over 2,200 inmates.

In another high-profile case, Eleiner Sánchez, a former prison director and political prisoner, died after allegedly being denied urgent medical attention for a severe intestinal obstruction at the La Crisálida detention center. Human rights groups and the political party Vente Venezuela have called for independent investigations into the lack of medical response.

Additionally, a riot was reported at the Centro Penitenciario de Occidente (CPO) in Táchira. The unrest reportedly began after prison officials allegedly mistreated family members during a visitation period. At least five inmates were injured during the incident, and families have expressed concern over the lack of official information from the Ministry of Penitentiary Services.
